Putting Things Into Perspective

“Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus”
Philippians 2:3-5 ESV

Last Sunday, Daniel and I, along with 200 other members from Epic church went into the tenderloin district of SF to help serve with a place called City Impact. There were two other church’s that joined us as well.

Daniel and I have both done mission trips and have both been serving in the church for years but this was the first time we would be able to do something together. We were excited but also nervous about what we would be doing.

The tenderloin is one of the poorest, if not the poorest, areas of SF. There are a lot of homeless people in that area as well as SROs and shelters. Driving into the area you see people lined up around the block for free meals and people sleeping on the sidewalk.

Daniel and I weren’t sure where we serving until we arrived. Our church leader, Lindsey, signed us up for evangelizing… If you know me at all you are probably laughing right now… I was terrified. I can talk to anyone and I was used to talking to the homeless from when I worked in San Rafael, but sharing my faith and telling people about the love of Christ was new to me.

Once people started filing into the street where we were set up, we were to start connecting with people. These people were in rough shape, a different caliber than Marin, but God helped me to relax and take it in strides. I started helping people find there way around and feel comfortable. I smiled and talked with them about what they were looking for. I got to meet a few people and learn things about their situations. God can use anyone to show his love on those who need it.

The day went great and it was amazing to see so many people leveraging the gifts and talents God has given them to serve The Lord. I walked away (almost unharmed…apart from a run in with a crazy lady who kissed me on the cheek…) with a new perspective and experience. God showed me what His love can do for others and that I need push myself/challenge myself to step out of my comfort zone because He will always be there to guide me.

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men,”
Colossians 3:22 ESV
